Built in 1911, Washington Junior High School served Duluth students until 1992 when Artspace acquired and transformed it into 39 live/work spaces. New kitchens and baths were installed but features of the former classrooms were retained including 12 foot ceilings, oversize windows, wood floors, cloakrooms, built in book and storage cases and chalkboards. One of the most interesting features is the original gymnasium running track which was preserved as part of two split-level lofts. Many of the live/work spaces offer spectacular views of downtown, the working harbor and Lake Superior. The downtown retail and business district is within easy walking distance. Most homes have open floor plans and are much larger than typical rentals providing plenty of space for living and for artists to create their work.
Coop amenities include a gallery, dance studio, music rehearsal rooms, meeting rooms, wood shop, clay room and laundry. Washington Studios shares the building with the Washington Community Center owned and operated by the City of Duluth so residents have access to basketball courts, a swimming pool, a workout room, exercise classes, and offices of several community organizations. Many residents work or teach in the community center.
